Verifying Identity With Precision
Biometric identification is the process of identifying someone based upon physical characteristics that are unique to an individual. The more unique the features used, the lower the chances of confirming an incorrect identity. There are many different types of biometric identification with some of the most popular being fingerprint scans and retinal scans. This form of identification is used to confirm identity when the situation requires great security; however, it can be an issue if the person being identified is unable to properly be scanned or is missing the characteristic being sought. Because there are many different types of physical characteristics that can be used for biometric identification, there are different types of security systems, which normally only use one specific type of characteristic. For example, a system may use a fingerprint scan to verify identity or general hand geometry, but not both. Most commonly used is the finger or hand, but the eyes, face, or voice may also be used. The most highly accurate form of biometric identification is scanning a fingerprint. As a fetus forms in the womb, fingerprints form. They are complete by the fourth month of pregnancy and are a completely unique picture stamped upon the finger. Not even identical twins have the same fingerprints. As a child grows, the picture grows as well; keeping the identifying ridges the same. Another popular type of characteristic is the use of hand geometry. This measures the physical composition of the entire hand rather than just the finger. Even though this is a commonly used type of identification, it is less foolproof, as the hand’s features are not as permanently fixed or as completely unique as the fingerprint. The hand is also used in another system of identification called palm vein authentication. This form of biometric identification is performed by an infrared beam scanning the hand as it is moved over the beam, and the system returns a distinct image of the veins in the hand. This is a very sanitary system because of the lack of contact, and it is one of the most difficult to counterfeit on the account of the veins being internal. There are two types of biometric identification that can be performed using the characteristics of the eye. The first and most common is the retinal scan. This is a scan of the capillaries that are located in the back of the orbital socket using a very low intensity light. This pattern is unchanging throughout development and adulthood, making this type of scan highly secure. The second type of scan using the eye is an iris scan. Using more than 200 points of reference of the furrows, rings and freckles of the iris, the colored ring of the eye, this scan verifies identity with little to no room for error. No matter which type of system that is used for biometric identification, the results are accurate. How accurate the biometric identification is depends on the complexity of the characteristics that are used. Biometrics is a very precise way of verifying identity, and has greatly advanced security protocols and systems.
