Choosing A Barcode Printer

Nowadays barcode printers of different price ranges are available in all shapes and sizes. On technical grounds, the general-purpose inkjet and laser jet printers are not capable of printing barcodes. Normally an add-on component or a module needs to be attached to them. For example, with the help of a flash card provided by Capella Technologies, a general-purpose HP laser jet printer becomes capable of printing barcodes. But this kind of barcode printer can only support a limited number of symbologies.

On the other side, thermal barcode printers can support multiple symbologies without any add-on component.

A barcode printer can print barcodes in two ways namely, “thermal transfer” and “direct thermal”. In the direct thermal method, the barcode is directly printed while in the thermal transfer method, a ribbon is used along with a print head. The print head is used to etch the image on a specific area after heating the ribbon.

Compared to direct thermal, the thermal transfer method is suitable for printing barcodes on various materials. So when deciding to buy a barcode printer, consider what type of material you will need to print the barcodes on.

The large barcode printers normally can switch between thermal transfer and direct thermal. The need to change the ribbon frequently is one of the disadvantages of thermal transfer. There could be a huge downtime in cases where the barcode printer is used in a manufacturing industry. If you are not printing a lot of barcodes continuously and if you are looking for faster output, then you should go for a “direct thermal” printer. For example, a direct thermal printer would be useful in a situation such as a hospital where a barcode is given to each warded patient for identification purposes.

Suppose you have to print hundreds of barcodes simultaneously. Then you can go for a thermal printer from zebra or symbol. They are quite good from the point of view of functionality and speed. It is advisable to buy a barcode printer having a large print width as well as a large capacity for print label.

During the last couple of years, the barcode printing technology has evolved tremendously. Recently, many security-related features have been implemented by barcode manufacturers in order to ensure that there is no fake coding. The newest barcode printers are even able to print labels coming with RFID tags. These security features have become compulsory nowadays in certain industries as well as manufacturing units and they also help providing an authentication guarantee.

When deciding what barcode printer to buy you must also take into consideration what environment the label will be used in, because in many cases when the barcode itself gets damaged it cannot be read, because of this you must pay close consideration as to how durable you will need your barcode to be, here is a simple guide on how to identify you barcode needs.
