Barcode Printers: The Ins and Outs
You would have seen a barcode that is affixed on all products. It consists of many parallel lines and numbers above or below these lines. We cannot understand anything out of these lines and numbers, but a barcode scanner very easily decodes the entire important information that is packed in this small place.
Barcode printers are applications that are similar to computer systems in many ways. These are used to print barcode labels of different types. These labels printed by barcode printers are affixed on the products. These products are sent to retails or distributed to places from where they are to be sold.
Whatever item you buy from market contains a barcode that is read by the scanner at the cash counter. All the information like price, item code, date of packaging, batch number, expiry date etc is contained in this barcode. As soon as this barcode is scanned, all such information is shared with the connected system.
Based upon the usage pattern, three types of Barcode printers are available in the market: small office, commercial and portable. The basic functionality of barcode printing is the same in all these three types but the number of prints that can be taken and some additional features can be different. Apart from this usage and size based differentiation, the barcode printers can be divided into two types based on the printing method. One type uses thermal printing method and the other type works on thermal transfer method.
In thermal printing, the black lines of barcode in specified sequence are printed due to reaction of thermal paper which takes place when heat is applied to the print head. While in thermal transfer the ribbon is used to transfer the ink to print the barcode on paper.
The usage pattern is one key factor to decide the type of barcode printers in different businesses. An industrial barcode printer is suitable for large manufacturing or warehousing setups because they require bulk quantity in short duration. Similarly for small offices or retails shops the use of “small office barcode printer” is preferred, due to limited requirements. For any type of quick labeling needs portable barcode printers are used, where very few labels are to be printed.
