Autoidsavings Barcode Vendors Compliant With New 2010 Barcode Standards
GS1, the global non-profit organization, that designs and implements barcode standards, has announced a global adoption date of January 1, 2010 for a new barcode with Reduced Space Symbology (RSS), which can store more data in half the amount of space and offers a temporary alternative to radio frequency identification (RFID) technology.
The new GSI standards were set in 2006 and are required to be completely in place by January 1st. Most of AutoIDsavings's vendor barcode products, including handheld barcode scanners (both corded barcode scanners and cordless barcode scanners) are already compliant. However, all resellers and end-users of barcode technology should keep this date in mind.
The benefits of adopting these new barcodes include:
- Smaller barcodes that contain even more information
- A barcode that can also contain serial numbers or expiration dates along with the SKU
These new barcodes specifically impact fresh produce in grocery stores. Before these standards became available, cashiers had only one option - to manually enter the code for all untagged produce (they could not scan the barcodes). As you might expect, this was slower than barcode scanner, had a higher error rate, and was unable to capture data such as produce aged. New barcode standards will provide faster, more accurate scanning. The ability for capturing lot numbers while scanning barcodes will allow retailers to track the FIFO (first in, first out) of produce.
Some of the barcode equipment that supports this barcode technology include Motorola (previously Symbol) handheld barcode scanners, as well as Symbol cordless barcode scanners. Additionally, Honeywell barcode equipment, formerly Handheld Products or HHP, provide support for these latest barcode symbols with their corded scanners and POS equipment. And, last but not least, there is barcode equipment from Intermec and Metrologic which also provides support for these technologies. RFID still has the capability to provide significant benefits but this latest barcode symbology from GS1 will allow barcode scanners to provide additional information with minimal incremental cost.
