CMT - Cash Management Trust as an Investment
Generally speaking when you think of investing in things such as shares, you know there will be a cost to buy them and also a cost to sell them. And if you invest in a managed fund, there will usually be entry and exit fees. But you can invest in a cash management trust (cmt) without incurring such costs. The cmt invests in the short term money market buying such things as government guaranteed securities and promissory notes from those organisations that are regarded as safe. The main benefits of the cmt are that it provides ready access to your cash, while offering a safe investment with an attractive return for the short term. If you are a person who does not like risk when it comes to your investments, then you may find that the cmt is attractive. And part of that attraction is that the cmt fund has no entry or exit fees. Of course, there are other, indirect fees and costs associated with a cmt. Management fees must be paid and then there are those brokerage fees, but these must be paid in all other forms of investments as well. Unless you read the fine print carefully you may not know about these other costs, because all except the brokerage cost are now not shown separately, but are included as part of the overall balance. So if you are looking for a safe investment, you may like to consider a cmt as a place to park your money for a short term.
